Eclipse: A Devious ExperienceThe dreaded "switch" day for Eclipse has arrived, and I honestly feel as though I have lost a dear friend... I just wanted to highlight a few things that would help make the current experience better (besides having the old, trusty, beautiful tried and true layout back), I feel you all— but we all know Eclipse is here to stay, so the best thing we can do is keep offering insightful and helpful feedback.I wish to express that most of Eclipse is still "new" to me, because, to be frank, I refused to use the interface until today because I am 100% old school, old hat, been-here-since-dirt-early days (well, not that early, but 14-15 years is still well past a decade), so— I make no qualms about expressing my preference for the older layout. That said, I am trying my best to experiment and give it a chance, primarily because I love DeviantART so much and refuse to allow my beloved Literature Community to die.My Initial Observations: I prefer my "old school" stats. I am one of those deviants who love offering "rewards" for kirbins, and celebrating stat milestones (for fun, not for popularity! I am "popular" enough, thanks). I do not like seeing "617.2K" pageviews. It's ugly, and not as fun to refresh the profile page and find out that "wow, my sweetpea @nightshade-keyblade got my 700K hit!" (Since, he visited, showed up on the visitor's widget [more on that below], and sent me a screenshot! Ah, great memories there.) Regarding stats, our "upgraded" new stats do not tell much, and to me feel inaccurate. I sorely miss the detailed stats of yesteryear, i.e.: my most popular deviation, which ones had the highest views overall, etc. etc. Are those going to be returning? I want to see the return of the "deviants online," and "vistors" widgets. Again, I like to know when my friends are online (like one of my favorite Literature CVs and people here, @JessaMar), you know— in case I may have a Lit community concern? Or, I simply may want to chat and say hello, if I know she is here. This may seem like a "novel" sort of concept to the designers of Eclipse, but this is why some choose to make their presence known— the opposite may be true for those of us (like me), who prefer being in invisible mode; as we value our privacy while online on DA, to do our activities.I also have always enjoyed knowing who visits my profile on the daily. Chances are, I will certainly visit you in return, perhaps give you a llama, and stay to check out your work. Nothing new here: as a community minded Lit deviant, I am always looking for new writers to feature! I received a comment on my Eclipse Literature Wish List Journal asking about the deadline to submit feedback for it. My old school DA brain thought: "Why are they asking me? I clearly specified that in the comment field on my journal." But then I realized on Eclipse, all of the descriptions for journals are gone (is it like that for deviations? I dare not look). This is not helpful— at all. Can we have something like what we had before, please? I am one of those people that prefers to read what the artist/writer has to say about their work. To me, it is important! Something relevant I believe @0hgravity mentioned that re-merits note: we can do without the"xx minute read" on journals. Seriously, we have to now know how long this is going to take to read? Blasphemy! Some of us enjoy reading, and I do not need a timer placed on it (which is not always accurate). IMO, this also "cheapens" my overall reading experience. I would also like to bring back the toggle to edit my journal and send the updated journal to my watchers, please! Sometimes when I make updates to this journal for example— I would like to alert the community that there is new content to read! Referring to journals once more, did Eclipse do away with the ability to submit my journals (or deviations) to my favorite groups? If so, this is disappointing, and I want it remedied! Tinkering on 05/21, I discovered this can be done by clicking on the "two little people" icon (for lack of a better descriptor), toward the top of the journal next to the comment bubble. Again, it might be helpful if this were clearly labeled to avoid confusion! Speaking of groups, why is it suddenly so difficult to find the notifications now? Thank you to @OneWithTheStars and and @WindySilver for bringing this to my attention! I also want to ensure that all of my deviations are being published for deviant's view to read only, to protect myself from online theft. Please bring back this publishing option submission tool shown below. (Please note: I was only able to find it when I attempted to edit a classic DA journal; no #hashtag options or the ability to make this journal private were available for this current Eclipse one!) Regarding my own privacy and safety, I would also like to keep tabs on my activity here— but not allow it to be left open for everyone to scroll through. We only have the option now to leave it for all to read, or to delete it entirely, and this is beyond frustrating. Bring back the customizable sticky menu! In the few days I have been using Eclipse, I have forgotten to check DDs, because I was so used to having it right here! Bring back Threaded/Nested, etc. replies to our comments. I do not desire any more unnecessary expansion or bulk on my all ready clunky Eclipse profile. Again, these tools once served a purpose for existing, and were used by me for a reason! Bring back my beloved Comment Signatures. You see @Little-Red-Hat's above? Not only does it tell you "I'm a hobbyist writer," and that she will leave feedback for you, but it also gives casual readers an idea of who she is. Plus, it is fun and gives us personality! I would also like to be able to use thumb codes again. Are those ever returning? Bring back "auto save" for journal/literature drafts! Please bring back the ability to preview my comments! I am a perfectionist and a writer, which means I like to "review/preview/edit" before I post, so I do not make mistakes. On that note, allow us to also preview our journals and deviations once more. Once again, so I can make final adjustments before I post my thoughts. I like to have the entire "visual" picture in front of me to get a good idea of how polished my work looks before my watchers receive it. I love getting 's and collects as much as the next Deviant, but why is it necessary to have the option to add something to multiple folders simply to add additional clutter to my already full inbox? I do not need (or wish to to be) notified that "Jimmy-shan" has ed the same journal I wrote 7 times! On the subject of s: I have folders I like to put things in. I.E.: The Literature Daily Deviations I collect. Why do I have to the deviation and then change / add it again to a collection? This is too much work! Please return the drop down listing where I can place a favorite into only once! Re-added drag and drop for our collections (not faves) on 06/11/2020. Regarding my "watch" inbox, please make it easier to find and use the "remove all" button for deviations and other notifications. I also do not want to have to jump back and forth to delete the deviation in my +watch folder if I happen to click on it first to view it, and then ultimately decide to delete it. Put the option to remove it back on to the actual deviation as well! On that same topic, that discreet little button by +watch to notify me of new deviations— not helpful. It took me too long to realize, "what just happened to all of my friend's deviations? I know they must have posted something...oh wait, let's try this." Sure enough, I suddenly see all of the artwork I was missing out on due to it mostly being hidden! Please default on the "all" tab verses "deviations." It is a small thing, but if I opt to open my watch tab, I would much rather have an overview of everything, and then simply click on what I want to from there. I find myself backtracking too much. Why do we need a HUGE header on our profile? Yes, this rose is lovely, and the purple a nice, rich color, but 1) I AM NOT A VISUAL ARTIST, and 2) not ALL of us can create some amazingly "artistic" profile header. DA updated the headers to make them smaller! I noticed this 05/28. Be forewarned: you cannot just select a random photo, you'll have to tinker a bit to select one that looks right because most of the ones I tried were still cut off at either the top or bottom. Correction and additional update: The headers now seem to appear smaller in my Firefox laptop browser, and now currently on my Chrome desktop version (I noticed this on 06/15). Still continue to proceed with caution if you tweak any images. They will still appear blurry on most browsers (that I have used), save for on mobile. There is so much wasted space with the header image, verses this:Honestly, I would much rather have my journal back— front and center— so people know what I am on about as soon as they visit my page! I had my journal there for a reason, administrators. On Eclipse mode, I have to scroll down for what feels like five extra minutes to try to attempt to actually find my profile, and when I do, there is little information offered, and I have to search even harder to find it at all! The blurry, pixelated avatars need to get a second or third look. While sizing down my overly huge username, take that down a notch too, please and thank you. It is beyond unflattering, my dear friend @jdrainville went to great lengths to create a lovely one, and I would like to still be able to fully appreciate it while in Eclipse. As an aside, the huge fonts still throw me for a loop. Yes! Clearly, I am LADYLINCOLN. However, I am not sure that tiny senior "medal" does much for my username brand. Please, can we just try and balance this out, DA? Your overall aesthetics are still giving me headaches, and I do want be able to use your new website, truly I do. You have had two years to perfect this, and it still has not been touched! That also holds true for this deviation story's title, for example:"Now reading: CANDY WRAPPERS!!!" I swear, this is how this font "sounds" when you see it.There is an ungodly amount of dead visual space and on top of that, this ugly, unflattering font does not allow for the understated tone that comes with this story; and please do not get me started on the lumping together of my story and the description right below it. (I guess journals do not have descriptions now, but our deviations still do? Can we keep it consistent, please?) Also, someone new coming onto the DA reading scene who may be unfamiliar with my work or my templates, will get confused. I got confused looking at it for the first time today! My suggestion: either size those font titles down or please allow us to have more font choices and/or customizable sizes, similar to Microsoft Word or WordPress. I understand we can no longer use things like HTML script, but we also went from using a more complex editor like our beloved Sta.sh Writer— to this one I am currently using— so I know it is feasible. On anther note, as many have said before me and long before now: the entirety of Eclipse needs to be scaled down a few 1000x notches. I use posting art thumbs as an example. (I also miss our old literature tags!) Thumbs from one of my old CSS journals verses a newer one. The thumbs on the right are HUGE and account for far too much space. I understand art is the focus (either for lit or visual pieces), but this is too much! Re-scale them down, please. Everything on Eclipse is too hidden. Please DA, label everything accordingly, and allow me do something that does not involve 2 or more clicks to get somewhere to find it! I am aware DeviantART believes the entire online population of the free world uses their mobile phone or iPad to browse the website; they have had updated polls, stats, etc. offered to prove it to us, but I beg to differ— some of us still do the majority of their work on a laptop and even some use their desktops! I hope and pray the designers eventually find a "happy medium" cross between functionality on mobile and for other devices. My point? Big, clunky fonts for mobile do not equate for laptops, etc. Plus, it still looks like a ten-year-old designed it. DeviantART, I still want to believe you can do better. I believe we are getting more customization options in the near future. I hope so! Right now, I do have something like this, with one of the generic color options Eclipse offers (I screenshot the old Deviousness Award appearance— I still severely dislike the new overhaul design they did on that, as well):What I would genuinely love to keep is something more like this offering below, (that I could freely customize more, and not simply insert an image into a generic color box):Things I like (So Far) About Eclipse: The Live Notifications: super helpful when I am busy and can see, for example, that my darling friend @Yuukon commented on one of my deviations! The ability to "like" comments: I know it is the bane of existence for some, and this is not Facebook, but there are times I genuinely appreciate what you have to say, and not only want to support you by liking your feedback, but I will also go out of my way to reply to you most of the time, too! Those that strongly dislike this ability argue that it gives others an excuse to be more lazy here. I am not one of those "click and run" deviants, I can assure you of that now. The ability to delete comments, posts, etc: We have been asking for this feature for years, so I was pleased when we finally got it. The "hiding" format was okay, but on classic, it did not "hide" much of anything, and honestly, made it stand out more. The ability to give someone a llama instantly in our notifications feed. The "up" arrow toggle at the bottom of the screen. I like tapping that and immediately being brought back up to the top of the page, as it comes in handy without the pagination resource and forced endless scrolling. The ability to block someone almost instantly (a new feature as of 6/11/2020). The ability to instantly toggle between a status update and a journal: Truth be told, this started out as a "brief" status update. Soon writing it, I knew it would grow into a journal project, so I was able to get here in one click and continue updating! I admit, that was super helpful. The varying color themes: It is nice to choose between a dark, light, and classic green theme. (I will still be happier when they make the dark and white less brighter and hurtful on the eyes overall, though), but it still a nice edition. The toggle between simple and advanced notification modes. I prefer "advanced," and have not had too many issues finding my feedback— yet. As an aside, I do not like the "bell" and "chat bubble" separation. Do one or the other (and please label it), to make it less confusing for people. Please also put back my message numbers on my main profile, so I clearly know what is what! I.E.: 1 deviation notification, 8 feedback messages, etc. The ability to add bold, italics, etc. on all of my comments instantly (for someone so used to doing <i>, etc.), this speedy tool is helpful and easier to use. 05/28: Text alignment is available for literature submissions (not journals). More on that here. Not all of these commands will work on certain browsers; this includes Firefox! Being able to save messages, view recently deleted ones, or un-delete them if you do so by mistake. I have accidentally deleted things on many occasions, so I find this helpful. Feel free to leave me comments below on your thoughts about your devious Eclipse experience thus far— but as always, please be respectful and courteous of my space, and of others commenting! As another heartfelt reminder: please no Eclispe "trolling" or bashing. These comments will be deleted. Thank you! With love,@LadyLincoln...
